Shwetha Menon Wet Saree Photos From Samayam

Wet saree pictures are a staple in Indian cinema. Directors have used the wet saree to convey sensuality and sexuality in the face of India's tough censorship laws for over fifty years. Although the trend possibly started with Hindi movies (Raj Kapoor being one of its earliest effective exponents), it is South Indian cinema that has made the wet saree its own. Entire movies have revolved around the wet saree and women getting wet in rain --- the Telugu "Varsham" and its Tamil remake "Mazhai" is one such example. However, the wet saree has also been used as a non-seductive plot device---the following example is of Shwetha Menon from the Malayalam movie "Samayam" . I have not seen this movie yet, but from what I can gather from the plot the situation is this: Manikyam (Shwetha Menon) is the wife of an irresponsible potter Chathappan who gets into trouble often. Assuredly, this is the case now and Manikyam must rush to the village elders(?) to ask for help. Heavy showers compound the problem. In this scene, Shwetha is wearing a beige cotton spotted saree with a maroon border and an emerald-green cotton blouse. As befits a village woman, her clothes are slightly worn from regular use and have become softer. As the raindrops envelope her, the slightly thicker blouse absorbs the water and darkens to a mossy shade. Her saree, being thinner, clings to her and gets transparent. Clearly she has chosen the perfect outfit for a runaround on a rainy day!

(1) While the crew prepares for the next shot, the sprinklers are off and Shwetha relaxes ever so slightly. More on this pic later. Status: moist-wet

(2) Seems like the crew is ready. Shwetha tenses for the next shot as water droplets cling to her face. The sprinklers are about to come on. Status: wet, semi-dripping

(2a) Blow-up of the previous pic. An enlarged caption to this still will be included at the end of the pics.

(3) The shooting is on at full tilt as Shwetha must navigate the slippery road under full sprinklers. An intense scene is in the making. Status: wet, rain

(4) One of the nozzles of the sprinklers can be seen on the right in this still. Status: wet, rain

(5) A quick turn to the left while the pseudo-rain lashes down. Status: wet, rain

(5a) A closer look at the swerve. The saree desperately clings to the shining green blouse, mirroring her character's stateof mind---while the cheap chappals add a quaint touch.

(6) Shwetha's character is begging for something from a village elder. No sprinklers for a while now. Status: wet, not dripping

(6a) The previous image has been cropped to focus on Shwetha. Note how a region of her blouse is wetter than the rest due to the water from her loose hair.

(7) Does the director have something to say? Shwetha is all ears and full of concentration as she sizes up her next shot. The sprinklers have just been turned off, but will come on again soon. Status: wet, semi-dripping

(8) Unlike the next still, Shwetha's upper body is moist and her blouse is a lighter shade of green. Possibly a longish break that allowed her to dry off somewhat. Status: moist (upper body blouse); moist-wet (lower body saree)

(9) The camera is rolling and so are the sprinklers. Shwetha's blouse has regained its default (for this scene) wet darker green shade. Status: wet, rain

(10) Wise words? A plea that is falling on deaf ears? Shwetha's character seems crestfallen. Apparently the rain has stopped, allowing Shwetha to become moistly wet (pun accidental :) ). Status: moist-wet

(10a) A blow up of the previous still. No rain/water for about fifteen minutes has allowed Shwetha to dry off somewhat. She is not dripping, nor are her clothes shining. Status: moist-wet
