Fashion trend for underwear as outerwear sparks 20 per cent rise in sales of nipple covers
A growing trend to wear underwear as outerwear has sparked soaring sales in sheer lingerie and nipple covers, a retailer said today.
Female shoppers are no longer hiding items such as lace bodies underneath clothing, according to the department store, Selfridges.
Following in the footsteps of celebrities including Lily Allen and Rihanna, women have been snapping up sheer bodies by the likes of Stella McCartney.
And to avoid revealing too much, they are investing in nude nipple covers which have seen a 20 per cent rise in sales.
Selfridges has now increased orders of the accessories which are designed to protect women's modesty.
Helen Attwood, head buyer for lingerie, said: 'Underwear as outerwear isn't a new phenomenon, however this spring designers such as Stella McCartney and Christian Dior are taking it to another level.
'Our customers are spending upwards of £250 on sheer bodies which they don't want to keep hidden under clothes.
'Today's "if you've got it, flaunt it" generation is proving that there is nothing like a peek of expensive lingerie to make a woman feel special.'
The nipple covers are available at Selfridges, priced at £10 a pair.

Frock horror for Britney Spears as she wears two unflattering outfits in a row
Just when it seems Britney Spears' style can't get any worse, she pulls a double fashion disaster out of the bag.
The 28-year-old stepped out in Miami over the weekend in an unforgiving white mini dress that proved just a little too snug for her figure.
The incredibly short number barely kept her modesty in tact, and having again shirked her bra, the singer gave onlookers rather more than they'd bargained for.
And the situation didn't improve by much as she hit the red carpet at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night.
Britney, who is notorious for ignoring the advice of even the very best celebrity stylists, looked a state as she arrived in a sheer lace Dolce & Gabbana dress over a black bodysuit.
The outfit proved more frumpy than fabulous, but there was at least one consolation - her usually matted extensions were elegantly styled into gentle, tumbling curls.
Britney, who was joined by her agent boyfriend Jason Trawick, was nominated for Best Dance Recording for her track Womanizer, but lost out to Lady GaGa for her hit Poker Face.
She is now expected to resume work on her new album, which she has been recording in Miami.
Britney recently denied reports she was suffering from depression.
Her management posted a series of U.S. tabloid articles about her alleged depression on her official website, with the words 'bulls**t' stamped across them.
She said recently: 'I'm learning to take better care of myself and not get stressed or down about things for nothing.
'I want to show people I am a strong woman. I have a lot of great things ahead of me that I want to accomplish. I feel positive and much happier, things are looking good again. I'm learning to relax and not place so much pressure on myself.'
Last month, the singer celebrated her birthday with Jason and her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James hanging by the pool at LA's Mondrian Hotel.
While Britney's current lovelife appears to be back on track, her ex-husband Kevin Federline admitted they are managing to regain a friendship as they co-parent their two sons.
He said: 'I think as time goes on, it keeps getting better and better and better. I mean, I'm really happy the way that my life is going right now, I really am.
'I think, you know, I have come a long way. All of us have…my whole family. It's gotten so much better from where we were.'

'I'm holding together pretty good': Cindy Crawford shows off her stunning figure at 43
It's been 25 years - and more than 1000 front covers - since Cindy Crawford burst onto the modelling scene.
But at 43 the original supermodel has proved she's still got the looks, and the body, which made her a superstar.
Posing in a series of black outfits, she showed off her figure in the latest edition of Harper's Bazaar.

Holding back the years: Crawford admits she used to use Botox
'There's a doctor here in London who I've gone to for Botox,' she said.
'I did a whole skincare line with him. But I haven't done Botox for ten years. And I didn't do collagen, I don't think.'
The American, who now has her own range of beauty products, said she had contemplated more drastic surgery, dismissing it because it made other women look 'unreal'.
Cindy, married to ex-model and businessman Rande Gerber, also revealed: 'Because people have such expectations of what they are going to find when they see me, that brings added pressure to fight the ageing process.'
