Zac Efron mobbed by fans on Bondi Beach... but he's too shy to ride any waves himself
Hundreds of children and teenagers descended on Sydney's famous Bondi Beach earlier today to see their idol Zac Efron taking part in a charity surfing event.
But crowds hoping to see the High School Musical star show off his surfing skills were left disappointed as he simply waded into the water for a photo opportunity.
Having previously spoken of his love for surfing, there's no doubt the 22-year-old can hold his own on a board.

But perhaps the thought of hundreds of people watching in action left the actor feeling a bit of stage fright.
The Californian actor and girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens were flown Down Under by Oakley sunglasses to raise awareness for their OneSight Foundation's Learn-To-Surf programme.
While Hugdens kept a low-profile in the nearby North Bondi Italian restaurant, Efron was driven on to the beach in a golf buggy.
Dressed in a red Oakley wetsuit, Efron was overwhelmed by the crowds of screaming girls clambering for a photo or autograph with the heart-throb.
While Efron was happy to wade into the sea, he declined to demonstrate his surfing skills.
He was flanked by pro-surfers Layne Beachley and Tom Whitaker and a few hand-picked youngsters who were learning to surf.
Instead of 'hanging 10', Efron was happy to play teacher as he helped some of the teenagers onto the surf boards.
Sydney local Craig Gill said his four-year-old daughter Petal was smitten with the teen idol.
He told MSN Australia: 'She's the only one that got a kiss. We just happened to come down, and she's the biggest fan of Zac.'
Efron and Hudgens, who have been dating for four years, arrived in Australia over the weekend to spend Valentine's Day together.
During their time in the Harbour City, they have been spotted dining at McDonald's in Circular Quay and shopping at the Oakley store.
Having grown up on the Pacific coast, Efron has spoken of his love of surfing.
He said two years ago: I 'love to surf every chance I get. Oh man, I would love to go surfing with Kelly Slater at Bells Beach (Victoria, Australia).'

Tess Daly is all smiles as she steps out for first time after husband Vernon Kay's sex text scandal
A smiling Tess Daly stepped out for the first time today since news of her husband Vernon Kay's sex text scandal broke. There was no sign of the strain the Strictly Come Dancing presenter has been under in recent days as she arrived at media studio in central London.
Looking slim and glowing in a pair of grey skinny jeans, dark grey blazer and cream scarf, Daly was still wearing her wedding ring as she headed into the Scramble offices in Soho.
Today marked the first time Daly, 38, had been seen in public since the revelations emerged exactly a week ago.
Family Fortunes host Kay admitted he had made 'foolish decisions' after it was revealed he had exchanged racy messages via text and Twitter with glamour model Rhian Sugden and four other girls.
The father-of-two, 35, publicly apologised to his wife and family on his BBC Radio 1 show over the weekend.
He told listeners: 'I've disappointed and let down my family and for that I am very sorry.'
Kay admitted he had sent the messages as 'harmless banter', but had realised it was inappropriate conduct for a married man.
The timing of the revelations couldn't come as at a worst time for Daly, who is releasing a parenting book.
The 'humiliated' presenter had cancelled several TV talk show appearances to plug her book in light of the revelations.
A spokeswoman for the star has confirmed that she will be ‘taking some time out’ instead.
A friend to the former model said she was 'shattered' by Kay's admissions.
The pal said: 'Tess is still furious with Vern and he has a lot of explaining to do. She hopes that now he has confessed it will be the end of it, but it’s still very painful for her.
‘She has been humiliated by someone she loves dearly and the timing could not be worse.
The mother-of-two had been booked for The One Show and This Morning next week and was due to sign copies of her book The Baby Diaries: Memories, Milestones and Misadventures at a London show us well as the Baby Show at the ExCel.
Kay and Daly have been married for six years and are seen by many to have one of the strongest marriages in showbusiness.
The couple, who live in a sprawling country mansion in Beaconsfield, have two daughters, Phoebe, five, and nine-month-old Amber.

Brit Awards 2010: The show goes on (but the wedding ring comes off) as visibly angry Cheryl Cole performs Fight For This Love
She has maintained a dignified silence over her husband's indiscretions.
But a visibly angry Cheryl Cole last night finally made her feelings clear during a centrepiece Brits performance - by not wearing her wedding ring.
After arriving on stage to a standing ovation and the biggest cheer of the night, she stared directly at a camera, contorted her face and belted out the lyrics 'We've got to fight for this love'.
It was a stark message to her husband Ashley who she had banned from the glittering ceremony after it was alleged that he had cheated on her with a blonde secretary.
Instead she was cheered on by her Girls Aloud bandmates Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh along with her mother Joan.
Waving her ringless wedding finger around, the singer performed a high energy dance routine with two costume changes from a white gold trimmed mac to a black sequined bodice and hoodie.
In the middle of the performance the Nineties Robin S's dance anthem Show Me Love was mixed with her track for a brief interlude, before Cheryl emerged again in her second outfit.
Miss Cole didn't even have the small consolation of an award - as she lost out in the Best British Single category last night to newcomers JLS.
In terms of prizes, the Brits belonged to U.S. star Lady Gaga who picked up three awards, winning International Female Artist, International Breakthrough Act and International Album.
She beat Leona Lewis, Pixie Lott and Florence and the Machine.
Boyband JLS also picked up Best Breakthrough Act while the Spice Girls were honoured with the prize for Best Brits Performance of 30 Years. Robbie Williams was handed the Outstanding Contribution to Music, while Oasis scooped the award for the Best Album of 30 years.
In the past few days her husband Ashley Cole has been embroiled in scandal, with claims that he had sex twice with an unnamed blonde secretary before Chelsea
On one occasion, Cole, 29, is said to have even turned the television set up in the hotel room where they were meeting because he did not want Chelsea captain - and fellow love cheat - John Terry, who was in the room next door, to hear their tryst.
It is believed that Mrs Cole, 26, is bracing herself for more revelations of her husband's philandering in the coming days. But she refused to pull out of the Brits.
'By going ahead with her performance in front of the celebrity audience and the millions watching on TV, she was sending out a clear message to Ashley that he will not take her pride away - whatever he does.'
However, Mrs Cole arrived at the Earl's Court venue in West London looking grim-faced in a puffa jacket.
She then went straight into her dressing room. All her planned Brits interviews had been cancelled and, according to sources, all the backstage staff were asked not to speak to the singer or look at her, unless they needed to.
But outside, on the red carpet, others were more than happy to claim the limelight. The up-and-coming ladies of the music industry-tried their best to outdo each other in a series of striking outfits.
