MUMBAI: The collector's office in Mumbai, in the last five years, has received around 150 requests for Indian citizenship. However, not a single foreigner working in Bollywood has so far applied for citizenship, though some of them are living in India for more than seven years.
The immigration department is busy scrutinizing the visa categories of dozens of foreigners who entered India on a tourist visa and began working in the film industry. "When one can get an employment visa and work on the basis of it, then what is the need of working on a visitor's visa?" asked an immigration official. The department is now classifying the visa details of foreigners who entered the country on a specific visa but are flouting the rules.
Among those who have been staying in India and working on an employment visa are Katrina Kaif (UK citizen), Deepti Naval ( US citizen), Salma Agha (UK citizen) and Yana Gupta (Czech citizen).
"Most of the actors and other foreigners working in Bollywood prefer staying here on an employment visa. Sometimes they ask for an extension in visa period. We consider whatever is correct as per the law," said a police officer from the immigration department.
Pakistani singer Adnan Sami has been staying in Mumbai along with his German wife. As per a bilateral treaty between India and the US, an American national can stay in India on a tourist visa for as long as 10 years. The same is applicable to Indian citizens in America as well.
Some models who came to India on a short-term tourist or employment visa and did not get their visa extended had to face the law. Norwegian model Negar Khan was deported from India on February 7, 2005.

Rushdie-Soha's secret meeting!
Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie isn't a man who makes much noise about his visits to Mumbai and so it comes as no surprise that he made another low-key entry and exit.
The acclaimed author, who has been rated in the category of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945, was here to meet Soha Ali Khan. The actress is playing a prominent lead in the international movie adaptation of his reputed novel Midnight's Children by filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
A highly placed industry source reveals, "Salman and Soha bonded big. The author is delighted that Soha is on board and travelled down to meet her and discuss the novel, its cinematic adaptation and Soha's character. Salman is always kept in the loop by Deepa as she understands that he will be excited to know everything. The novel is one of his best works and he would want to see everything in order before cameras roll."
When contacted, Soha confirms, "I did meet him and thoroughly enjoyed his company. It is a pleasure to discuss things with him and know his perspectives. I have been a huge Rushdie fan and Midnight's Children is one of my favourite books." His writing style, she says, has this magic realism and element of fantasy that is wonderful. "I love that he is sometimes so irreverent about things," she adds.

Big B harassed by blogger
Amitabh Bachchan says an unknown person has been sending derogatory and abusive material on his blog and mobile phone. After enduring it for months, he has filed a police complaint.
"There is a serious effort by a member that writes and comments on this blog to use language and expression that is abusive, filthy and utterly disgusting," Big B wrote on his bigb.bigadda.com. "I have brought this to the notice of the authorities and (sought) corrective measures to see none of the stuff that comes from this foul mouthed individual shall ever be allowed on this platform. Any further attempt from this person shall now be under legal cyber space action, now very prominently activated in the country.
"This blog, this platform, this home for our extended family members is a sacred and revered destination and any attempt to defile it shall be dealt with in the most severe manner," he added.
Amitabh further revealed he is also receiving derogatory messages on his phone.
"Further more. This individual has been sending me the most unprintable abuse on SMS on my phone. I have, after great tolerance for months, reported the matter to the police and they will be taking serious punitive action, not just in my country but in the country of the origin of these missives."
